MAF-Mass Air Flow Sensor-supply almost gone
The MAF (Mass Air Flow) failed in my car. Symptom: car stumbles when it accelerates and sometimes stalls when coming to a stop. Eventually threw a CEL (Check Engine Light). Blinking code reader indicated bad MAF stating under voltage or open/shorted. Tried cleaning MAF with CRC brand MAF cleaner. Cleared codes and CEL with code reader. The cleaner seemed to work at first because the engine actually started a lot quicker. I thought I solved the problem. Went out for lunch and hit the expressway. As noted in the attached document, the car ran fine until I barely applied peddle. Then the engine would stumble. Let up on gas and all seemed well. Got back home and read codes again. Same fault. Then the fun started. Try to find a MAF online or at the dealer. I called my dealer and was told none available anywhere. Went online and found a great deal at Parts.com, ordered buy reply came back that part no longer available. To make a long story short, I found one MB part number rebuilt unit at Pelican parts and boy did I pay for it. Was told they bought all remaining stock and they only had 2 left so they have the market cornered which is fine since I need the part. I'm not going to park my car and part it out because they were smart buying up the few remaining rebuilt units out there. My 22 year old SL500 looks great, will drive great again when the MAF is installed and I will now keep an eye out for items that need replacement. I just ordered a set of MB spark and coil wires from the dealer and was to there are only now 2 more left in the MB parts system. After market sets are available but there is a big variation in plug wire length vs. the MB set. I also ordered a full set of MB breather hoses as mine are as hard as a rock. Good luck....
