Gearstick moves around without resistance, does nothing.

I was entering a very long straight forward stretch on the road and decided to give the car som gas. Geared down to the second gear mode on the transmission box and gave gas, when I was closing in on rev limiter I changed it back to drive on about 4.5k of 6k rpms. But the gearstick was extremly lose and did nothing. There was no sound and car was still running in second. The car was still driveable and there was no fluid leakage or anything, but when I stopped the car it won't start. The gearstick moves around from P to 2 gear mode without doing anything and without resistance. The car won't start because I think it is still in 2 gear, and it wants me to gear into P before starting the car. There was never a sound or a strange movement and no lights on the dashboard. It feels like the gearstick just disconnected from some sort of lever that goes into the gearbox. The car does not go into P so it can still be pushed around. I can still move the gearstick through the gears and nothing happens, I can literally push the gear stick around with a straw.

It's a 1993 SL600 v12 with 148K kilometers on it, about 90k miles.

Apparently the clip that secures the gear shift lever to the rod linking it to the transmission has fallen off, and the lever is no longer attached to the rod.

Do you know how to fix this? Is there a guide somewhere?
