1998 SL500
Soft Top Roof Cycle Frequency

I try to use my soft top as infrequently as possible in order to save on wear and tear mostly. What I am asking is this infrequency of use, detrimental to the overall performance of the system? Is there a minimum up and down cycling that would benefit this hydraulic system on an annual basis? Thanks for any input or suggestions.

In my view there is no harm in cycling the roof. In fact I believe that failure to do so is detrimental as the seals will not lubricator. I do not that seals are a weak spot in this car and will need replacement if they are OEM. Just had mine redone last year by restoreyourmercedes.com.

As I mentioned I had Victor at restoreyourmercedes.com do the hydraulics in my 2000 SL500. He's a real detail guy and he's very reasonable with his prices. He's in City Island which is actually pretty easy to get to. He works on cars that come to him from all over the country. He's also skilled in rebuilding all of those electronic parts that are hard or impossible to get. Here is a video of rear trunk lining removed:
