HELP!!

So, our 1991 500SL has not been on the road for a year, because it has been one thing after another. The most recent was that it had sat too long and rust from the fuel tank made its way into the FD. I went ahead and replaced the injectors, drained and cleaned out the tank, and rebuilt the FD. Now it just turns over and every once in a while it stars and then just dies again. I can smell gas. When I first tried to start it, it seemed like the starter couldn't turn the engine. Now it does turn over. I am so confused and really need to get this this going. I am so close to just parting it out and being done. It's only got 92000 on it and I really don't want to get rid of it, but my days off are becoming not may days off with all of the time I am putting into it.
Thank you so very much for any info!!

I'd monitor spark with an inexpensive tester commonly available from auto part stores. I'd crack-open a fuel line which leads from the top of the fuel distributor to an injector and verify the continuous flow of fuel. If no fuel, then crack-open the fuel line leading from the fuel pressure regulator to the fuel tank -- if no fuel here, then fuel pressure is inadequate.

I do not understand how significantly-large flakes of rust from the fuel tank could pass through the fuel filter to reach the fuel distributor...
