Should the dash and button lights always be on?

I'm a recent owner of a 1999 SL500 and still learning the ins and outs of this car. I've noticed that the dash & switch illumination stays on even if the control knob is is set to "O". At first I assumed it has a light sensor and I'm just seeing this in my dark garage, but now I'm certain these lights stay on constantly. Also, my corner lights are always on by default. Is this by design? Could not find any info in the manual.
Thanks!

So something must be wrong with my light controller. There is no difference between O "off" and "parking" >o o<
All other settings on the knob work properly, so I doubt the problem is in the switch.

The switch would be my prime suspect.

Where in the world are you?
When I have had cars built and delivered for Germany the light switch operation had other features that the USA vehicles.
in several modern models the ambient light sensor controls panel/ operation light brightness when the vehicle is operational.

I'm in Canada and the car was originally built for Canadian market. Pretty sure its the same spec as US.

If the car was built for the Canadian market it would be equipped with DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS.
If it is originally a US car DTL's would have been added.

I am confused, I could swear the lights inside and around the buttons the orange thingy have been on all the time. now they are only on when I switch the headlight to on ( used it for years on auto)

Hi . I have a US market car I imported to Vancouver BC, and had to fit DRL. I was fortunate enough to find a DRL module on Ebay, and wired it in as original. It turns all the external lights, and dash lights on when moved in to R or D. Hope this helps.
