1990 R129 500SL - Disconnecting Hydralic Fluid
Hello All,
I have a 90 500SL that has a heavy leaking left cylinder. Any operation of the tops has it spraying like a super soaker.
I have a hard top on the car now and wont be messing with the rag top / operation any time soon (other things I need to access first).
My question is, if I drain the entire hydraulic fluid reservoir and then disconnect, will I damage the system anyway?
Basically my goal is to cease the fluid from leaking on the driveway until I make my way to the top repair.

So the hard top is on and latched down?
My fluid leaked only when I pushed the top control button, up or down, so don't push the button?
As for the fluid leaking on the drive way/ garage/ linen pants/ etc that may continue until you drain out all the pockets of hydraulic fluid that . I would not operate the soft top with the pump until the cylinders are repaired. Klaus at TopHydraulics in Oregon has been a great resource,

When I pressed the button to put the top down, then latch in the top, I could hear it spraying from inside the cabin. So now no button pressing will happen unless I’m fixing the cylinders.
Just wanted to make sure that if I drain the pump and let the rest seep out until dry that it won’t damage the pump in anyway being empty, disconnected, and not operating.

There's no need to drain anything, if you're not operating it.
The system is not under pressure. If you're worried about
hitting the button on accident, pull the fuse.
Leaving the system empty is inviting moisture in, and that's
probably not a good thing.
