A mechanical engineer on another forum offered a technical analysis and asserts there are no advantages, and this comports with common sense.
Mercedes did not cut corners in engineering the 129. They did the opposite. So, if an inexpensive brace across the middle of the engine compartment would have been materially beneficial, don't you think Mercedes would have incorporated it? Of course you do. And note that on the underside of the chassis there are four metal braces -- two in the front, two in the rear -- which help to stiffen the chassis.

thank you for that response.
I have a different question - concerning suspension bushings- the car is a 2002 with 30K miles - do the rubber bushing degrade with age as well as mileage?
thank you
