Hard top paint protector ?

Just bought a 1996 SL500. (Pic is not my car) I'm trying to find out what the black area is called on the rear decklid just behind the convertible boot that the back of the hardtop would rest on, as it seems.to be missing on mine. The area on mine is just dull paint without clearcoat so whatever it is must have been removed at some point.

.Is it a.black decal to protect the paint from the hardtop thats missing or is it an actual black panel ?
