Back in the Game

After having kicked myself for over two years for selling my triple black 2001 SL500 Sport I have finally located a another. It's a 2001 Silver SL500 with 21K miles. I paid a premium for it but knowing I'll only drive it about 1,000 miles or less a year I know it will retain its value. R129s are beginning to appreciate in value so take good care of yours and enjoy the ride. Here's a pic of mine.

Back is doing well for 74 and a lot of hardware. You sure got a cream puff there. Where did you find it? That's gotta be a star at the golf course parking lot

She's a beauty! A twin to my '00 with 37k miles. It's hard to gauge value on these lower mileage ones as higher mileage ones seem to be dirt cheap. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pick her up for?

It's true, low mileage ones are becoming very scarce and now command a premium. Those cars are becoming collectible. The higher mileage ones are still good cars and can be enjoyed for many miles. Because this is a public forum I cannot state the purchase price but for the record it was much more than $100.00.

Why is the price such a secret? And why does the public forum keep it a secret?

It shouldn't.

I got my 97 SL600 with 93K miles in 2004 for $22K.

Lets see if anything happens to me.

My guess is that in case he sells it, he doesn't want someone to find out how much he paid. I'm also curious as mine may be for sale next year. It's not quite as low of miles but it's always nice to see price points. For nicer cars, Bring a Trailer search function for completed auctions is a useful guide.

Isn’t that the most depreciated car in the history of the world, the only reason I know is that I bought my 95 sl600 in 2006 or 07 for $4000 with 110,000 miles it was definitely neglected but most of he problems it has or had were from poor design and planning. If god hasn’t shown you the wrath of an old v12 Mercedes by now, you’re on the right path.

I've had a bunch of fun cars and nothing compares to the SL600 experience. It's a fantastic Grand Touring cabriolet, even my wife like driving it.

No regrets, I didn't buy the car to sell it later for a profit. I bought it to enjoy it.

I guess the guy who paid $140K for my car when it was new might feel differently, but I got to meet an original SL600 owner (triple black 98) earlier this year and I asked the question.

He got as much pleasure out of owning his car as I did. His ONLY regret was not being in good enough health to drive is as often as he liked.

Having written this, I'm not really a fan of the 93-95 SL600s. They are obviously great cars, but they require more maintenance (dual coils, wires, distributor caps, etc.) and don't have as advanced safety features (ADS II, BAS, etc.) I think most of the early issues (and there are a bunch) with the V12 were ironed out for the later cars.

I bought my 99 with 140k miles for $5200
I don't know if I paid too much but the car was in great shape and did not cost me much in maintenance.

Allowed me to spend the extra money on installing AMG parts. And now the car has a new upgraded engine with less than 25k miles on it.

I never consider my cars as investments, but you never know, someone may be willing to pay top dollar for all the hard work I did.
