SL/R129: Gas cap went Ajar - wound not seal tank or go back on
During the sight seeing - my wife detected a gas smell (so did I but ... I said it was other cars going up / down the 12% grade) - the smell went away.
About an hour into our highway run ... I noticed the Gas Gauge lights blinking. We then noticed the Check Engine light on.
We have had that before if after fueling the cap in not screwed on tight. So I pulled over - shut the car off & proceeded to screw on the cap tighter (the pump girl 120 miles ago must have done something wrong).
I unscrewed the cap and could not screw it back on. It was like a bad dream ... on the side of the road, in the middle of no where & can not screw the gas cap on.
I noticed there was a strange miss alignment of the tabs on the cap. Like this image off the web ...
Fortunately we were able to Google and find a fix. The metal tabs need to be prayed up & the plastic ring needs to be re-aligned.
my wife & I used found objects (pop and beer cans out of the ditch) to accomplish this ... but we did it.
The gas cap went on in normal fashion - the gas gauge stopped blinking. The Check Engine light did not go out. But we continued to drive 3 hours through a mountain pass at highway speeds with no problems.
So I am thinking now - it was not some fuel pressurisation problem - but a gas cap age problem. Just need to reset the Error codes.
