Opinion on this SL that I've just acquired
Hi Folks,
I've just bought this classic R129 at auction. I was wondering what people thought of it ?
Any things to look out for??
And any likely preventative maintenance issues, or other tips, etc???
Greatly appreciate any feedback,
Cheers,
Horgand

You have acquired an OLD OLD convertible. Known failure modes are:
A/C evaporator --'running crack' in tube sheet requiring replacement a 20+ hr job
A/C compressor damaged from low charge
Wiring all dash, engine, front end wiring insulation will need replacement- another 40 hour job
Hardtop all hydraulic cylinders (12) require re-sealing another mega hour job
Hardtop window plastic yellows and turn stiff and cracks
Heater multi-valve failure
suspension hydraulic cylinders require replacement
the rest of the typical wear/replacement parts are routine.

Change all fluids to begin with. Can be a great project car if you're DIY. Just take on one issue at a time and bring it to new condition.

Congrats on the purchase.
As others have mentioned, first get all fluids changed and see if there are any leaks.
And have a close look at all the control arm bushings and suspension parts.
Next up is cooling system ( hoses, Thermo, radiator, fan and pump )

If I was offered a decent deal to px for a 500SL instead, would you reckon I should take it?
All advice much appreciated.
