94 SL Brake Release Handle Replacement

The brake handle available from Pelican Parts & others slides in a frame behind the dash. This frame in turn is positioned by a plastic clip arching across the top (last photo bottom view) The left side of the clip is anchored to the dash by the Phillips head screw at the bottom left front of the dash. (Open the drivers door and look at the dash where it meets the door frame top photo). Remove this screw. Two more screws partly obscured by the handle unless like mine it is broken off (middle picture). Remove these 2 screws. Remove the 3 small screw running under the instrument cluster that hold the carpeted piece. Remove the 8 mm bolts holding this piece and the plastic pan below the dash to the dash. Then you can pull the brake handle assembly into view.

the cable is like a bicycle brake caliper cable. If you have a set of miniature vise grips use them to hold the cable after pulling it forward out of its housing. Release the cable and slide the broken handle out.

it’s a bit tricky getting it back together because you have to attach the cable with the assembly back in the dash (loose w/o screws so you can still move it.
