Insurance costs

I am looking at buying a 2001 500 sl and my insurance co State Farm said the cost is 782.00 every 6 months.I thought that was crazy for a summer only car. I checked with Geico and they were about the same price.I’m 73 years old with a spotless driving records. Is this the normal price for these cars

Hagerty will insure you at agreed value for a very reasonable price. I have found no mileage restrictions - anyone please correct/update that - and I currently pay $539 for a year (suburban Atlanta). Agreed value $15000, and I get to keep the totalled wreck (parts!).

Hagerty is generally best for old Benzes that are not driven that much, and the agreed total price is a good feature. My agreed price is $12K and I believe I pay under $400 out here in California.

SL 500
I just insured my recently bought 1998 MB SL500 for a really low annual rate, with great coverage. The age of my car qualified it for most collector car insurance company policies. If you drive your car a fairly low number of miles annually, your car should also qualify for a collector car policy. These rates are generally much lower than standard car insurance policies, but they do have some restrictions. The restrictions vary quite a bit from company to company, so it pays to shop around, talk to at least a couple different providers, and see if one will fit your needs. Almost all of them use agreed upon values. And Hagerty is not your only choice by any means. There’s Leland-West, Grundy, American Collectors just to name a few others.
