Wheel Stud Length Issue - Switching from stock Monkar to stock Albali
Curious if anyone has replaced stock 16” Monkar wheels (16x8) with 17” Albali wheels (17x8.25)? I have a 98 SL500. Both sets of wheels are stamped with 129 part numbers and ET34 offset. However, on the 17” Albali wheels the stud extends approx 14mm further past the hub flange than the original 16” Monkars.
Looking in the MB parts catalog, the wheel stud part number is the same for both model years.
The extra length of the stud interferes with the wheel rotation. I can buy shorter studs or spacers, but I want to make sure I’m not missing something bigger?
Anyone else run into issues putting MY 99+ stock wheels on a MY 98 or older SL?
Hi. I did precisely this replacement on exactly the same car. My 1998 SL500 came with the stock 16” Monkars. I wanted bigger diameter wheels and settled upon 17” as best for my application. Came across a used set of the 17” Albali’s and bolted them right on using the original studs from the Monkars. Fit perfectly and I’ve never had any clearance or other problems. The fact that MB calls for the same stud in both applications should be good enough for you. And to repeat, precisely this same replacement using the original Monkar studs worked perfectly and trouble free for me. Car definitely handles better with the 17”s than with the 16”s
