Side tracked Front End?

On a smooth and relatively level road (acknowledging the crown) my 1997 SL500 drives straight with no issues. But sometimes when the road is a bit rough or there are wheel ruts/truck wallows the steering seems to get a little sloppy and side tracked like it has other ideas. I replaced the strut mounts and steering damper as all were original with no significant change. The car has 116k KM and all is original except the sets of parts mentioned and the rims/tires.

It is worse when the car is cold and terrible when I hit a bump. The shocks appear to be in good condition as there is no signs of oil leaking.

Check bearings for play. Tighten if needed .
Also if you have play in steering box, on center play, that could contribute. You can tighten the steering box a bit, research forums.

But first check front bearings for play. Are tires good?
