Question 1991 300SL power seat problems

The power seat on my 1991 300SL self-activated while I was driving and positioned itself on the most forward, upright position, impossibly uncomfortable to drive. When I attempted to slide the seat backwards by using the button (pressing it 'back') it would only go forward. The passenger seat seems to be working fine. I removed the corresponding fuse from its slot, disconnected the cables from the unit under the seat and by patching it to an outside power source repositioned the seat to my liking. I am afraid to reconnect the cables and have the same problem again. In fact, it seems to me that the probles rose from excess moisture collecting under the seat. Could I just use the unit on the other seat to relpace it or do I have to get a new, or salvaged, one?
