Maintenance & Depriciation Costs
Something I figured out to post as a reply on the R230 forum. This information is more on topic for the R129 form. For any one interested.
For the past two years of ownership ... having bought a 1999 SL 500 for $ 70,000 Cdn in Dec 02 at 38,000 Km ... we seen about $6,600 Cdn retail per year in depreciation ... and maintenance (including the 3 year extended warranty cost) has run $ 2,600 Cdn per year.
No breakdowns. A couple of dash A/C display and electronic sensor issues which were fixed under the extended MB warrantee.
Great fun in a well above average car for a reasonable cost at this stage. We now have 64,000 Km on her

So let's get this right. $13,200 for depreciation, $5200 maintenance over 26000 km, call it $0.60 Cdn a mile, doesn't seem bad to me. There's no doubt that normal maintenance costs are reasonable but a major item like my gearbox will seriously skew the situation.
One way to look at it is that as the car gets older, you lose less on depreciation each year and spend more on maintenance. I'm under no illusions that my 911 will depreciate far more than the SL600 would have cost to maintain if I had kept it

I think the figures work out to $ 18,400 Cdn combined depreciation and maintenance. Divided by 16,120 miles. Equals $ 1.14 Cdn per mile.
