R129 New Front Shocks too High

I just installed 2 new Bilstein B4 22-002327 front shocks on my 1996 SL500. They are identical to the original OEM in every way. I tested both and they each compressed normally and expanded like expected. I installed both and when I lowered the car the new suspension only compressed about 1 inch and the front of the car now sits about 6 inches too high. I immediately raised it again and will NEVER drive it like that, but cannot figure out what is causing this!
I also installed new upper shock mounts and brake rotors/pads

. Thanks for your help!

Either someone stole the engine or the shock absorber is hitting the edge of the strut mount and cannot move further into the strut mount. I suspect the second solution. Are you sure you buy the right strut mount, there are two different one.

This is the strut mount I purchased from Autohaus when I changed my shocks last summer.

Febi-Bilstein Strut Mount; Front Upper
P/N: 1243200473
2 x $35.99

I'm not at home right now so cannot run out to the garage and look but it does seem like I had more threads sticking out of the nut on the top of the shock. I did gain some height when I lowered the car but not 6". I do recall it was more challenging than expected getting the top part back in place. Although I had new boots and bump stops as well.

AA1243200473 is the right part number, should fit. I have seen parts that didn't fit the shocks, which was super annoying. There is very little space between the shock and the bearing, if it is not installed in the middle, it won't fit. If you fasten the strut mounts when the car is not on its wheels, the bearing may not be in the right place because there is some space between the three holes and the screws. I would loosen the three nuts and rock the front of the car if necessary.
