SL/R129: Rear End Clunk

Rear End Clunk
When I am coasting or braking to a stop, like a red light, I feel a clunk from the rear when the car down shifts - probably from second gear to first. It feels like it's coming from the driveshaft to rear differential connection.
I'm not too familiar with working on that part of the 129 or 140. Can anyone provide a little initial guidance on narrowing down the source of this annoying problem?

I had that issue and it turned out to be motor mounts. I would have sworn it was from the rear. Found after I sold it by the mechanic servicing the car for the buyer.
