I don't know any specific weaknesses of the 1998, but I was warned by several people to get a Starmark SL500 and purchase the extended warranty. These cars can be very expensive to repair if something breaks. If Starmark isn't available or not for you, I would have a trusted, independent mechanic who specializes in MBZ take a look a the car.

Good luck on your SL500. I purchased mine I few weeks ago and have been having a ball. It's a great car.

One of the items that appears frequently is the top and top hydraulic system. If you do an advanced search, using "hydraulic" for the keyword and this forum as the search area, you'll find quite a few posts.
Nothing else comes to mind, but as hotel_calif said, nothing on any MB is cheap to fix. I did the same and got a Starmark and purchased the extended warrenty.
Best of luck,

S

i believe 98 is the last year for starmarked cars for 2004. once 2005 comes around i think 99 will be the earliest year for a starmark warranty.

just got rid of a 2000 sl500 designo and it was a great car with really no major problems. only thing i hated was how much interior noise there was. seemed like something was always rattling or making some kind of noise. it also could have been just driving around on the really bad roads in nyc. you hit a bump/pothole and the car sounded like it was going to fall apart.
