SL/R129: No Temperature panel lights

No Temperature panel lights
I own a black 2001 SL500. One pet peeve however. There are no lights on the temperature panel buttons. I end up having to hit the internal light near rear view window to change settings at night.
Is there a fuse problem or do they simply not light up.

The dealership replaced the A/C control face plate under the extended warrany. It now works great.
In addition to the back lights not working ... my face plate had suffered an impact that had cracked the inner workings of the display
