chrome exhust tips

I got this picture from bollar's post. Is the inner part exhust tips suppose to be chrome? The inner part of the exhust tips look bronze. Look at the redarrows in the picture.

Your arrows are a bit hard to see.

As I recall, the exhaust tip slides over the tailpipe. It has a rolled edge and is chrome (or at least looks like chrome). Inside of this you can see the rough edge of the tailpipe, which I believe is stainless steel(?). This may have a bronze tone, similar to the color of the resonator just upstream of it.

Or are you refering to the inner surface of the exhaust tip - where it comes in contact with the tailpipe? The chrome plating here may have discolored due to heat and/or exhaust residue.

Ah! This appears to be the German way to chrome. Chrome over brass. I knew they did this for vintage Mercedes but not the new ones. Cannot remember the name of the technique.

Maybe I am wrong, but I hope I am right.

Lets say if you take the chrome exhust tips off, the inner side looks like brass. I can see a perfect line that forms a circle where the chrome meets the brass color on the edge of the chrome exhust tips.

Those chrome tips are OE on your car, right Lovin?

Is it just a metal polish residue stuck between the inner and outer? Time to get the Q-tips out!

Talking Time for some work Tiggerfink...

My pipes are OEM.

I got down and looked and surprisingly enough I do see the line around the whole pipe.

On my car one side of the line is the bright chromed metal and on the inner side it is just a duller colored metal but sorry Tiggerfink, not brass but silver.

I believe the line is just the point where the chroming ends. I believe your brass color is from the exhaust use so Blue is right, it is time to get out the Q-tips.

My guess is you will need some metal polish.
