Question Care and Feeding of an SL500

I read recently on this forum that a person spent around $700 on their first service call. I assume that this was a factory recommended service visit. How often do these visits occur and are they all so expensive? What would be a rough estimate of "wear and tear" yearly expenses plus factory recommended service costs that one could expect to spend in the first 5 years of SL500 ownership? Thank you in advance.

I believe it was more like $150 for the first 10k service.

Every 13000 miles, there is a check up thats due. It rotates between an A service and B service. Take a look at the service guide for an explanation of the services for they are slightly different. I am not positive, but I think each one will run about $500+. I hear that even if you don't need half the things, they change them anyway and there is no way to get a discount even if you don't need some things. Again, this is not official, just what I've heard.

I've got about 7 or 8 months before I come up on 13K. I'm probably going to have to get new tires shortly after (about $1400) because the staggered sized AMGs can't be rotated. I've heard most people here get around 15K on their staggered tires. I'm going to try my "darndest" to get 25K. Does anyone think that's possible? I drive the car extremely gently and have taken it really hard around a curve only once. I went 67000 miles on my old Bonneville SSEi tires, although those were rotated a few times. What can I say, I want to get my moneys worth.

Thanks Chris and jettie-

Those prices you quoted are spaced far enough apart that the price is not too bad. One car that I'm looking at (if I don't place a 2006 order) has the AMG package (which I don't really want but everythng else about the car is on target for the most part). The salesperson said that the tires are performance rated and very soft so they wear out quickly which I take is what Chris was mentioning - he said they're $500 apeice.

Thanks to everyone on this forum for being so informative not only to my questions but everyones' questions. I'm learning a ton of good stuff here!

Servicing for MBs is quite reasonable providing you don't need something out of the ordinary. So, regular maintenance, brakes, tyres are not expensive. If you're out of warranty and something electronic or hydraulic fails, not good news.

The biggest expense of owning an SL is the depreciation which of course is wrapped into the monthly payments if you don't buy outright. Maintenance is relatively minor.

Its about $150 for each service plus extras. The 4 years of maintenance is actually cheaper than taking in my ex Yukon Denali in for service for 4 years. I took my Yukon in for every 3,000 miles. I guess it is good because almost every one at the dealership wanted to buy it when they heard I was getting a new car. The maintenance for every 6,000 miles was about $400 bucks on the Yukon.

The tires are about $300 a piece. Michelin actually gave me a free new tire when my wife put a big hole in it during the first week of owing it. She just got Lasiks, and she can see the road hazards now.

If your dealer is chargeing $500 bucks for a tire, you need to go to a new dealer. My dealer is charging about $320 for the rear and about $250 for the fronts.
