Yes it will. They are phasing out the 3 valve 5.0L.

Yes whoo whoo. well after my lease is due on my c class I think I know what I'm upgrading too That's gonna be one great engine on that car. It's like getting amg type hp for price of an sl500. I know you could never have too much hp but I mean 388hp on a 2 door convertible roadster like that should be more than enough and a great platform to mod well into the 400's. just to make sure no silly M3 kids in the new 400hp car could rip you and your expensive sl500 like they've always done in the past lol!

FYI....the M3 boys will still beat you. The SL is a very heavy car and not made for the same purpose the M3 is made for. The M3 guys hang with me in my 996 at the track and I have NEVER seen an SL there. You are comparing apples and oranges.

I am currently shopping for a new SL to add to my stable and I have no intention of tracking it nor getting rid of my Porsche. Just want a great luxury roadster like the SL as my daily driver.

I think the M3 Cab owners would have a hard time hanging with the 388hp SL500 (in a straight line, unless that ABC truely is that good). Heck, doesn't the SLK350 have the same 0-60 times as a M3 Cab?

Well it's not like it matters. All M3's are gay anyways.

M3 Cab runs pretty quick. It's around 5.2 for the SMG from what I've tested.
SLK350 though is around 5.5 seconds though.

Both are automatic, and I think the SLK has the edge because it's got a fantastic hardtop convert.

All the 0-60 times would be close, but come on guys........0-60 times mean jack. I mean, my 996 doesn't have the greatest 0-60 time but I would challenge any 388hp SL at the track come next year when it is released.

And for the M3.....The M3 CAB though isn't really an M3......rather a CAB with a sweet engine in it. Structural rigidity is severely compromised.

DON'T FORGET TO LOOK AT THE WEIGHT OF EACH OF THE CARS!

I'm not sure where you live, but here in Houston, we have a lot of lights on the feeder before we get on the freeway.

Sadly, lots of idiots think that being in the left lane means you can block anyone else.

Grew up in San Antonio (25 years) and I know what you are talking about. I guess that is the exception to the rule

The best mods I have done to the 996 are participating in as many DE (drivers ed track events) as I possibly can! Learning to drive a car fast is one thing, but in total control is another thing. As for mods to the car basic stuff like exhaust, short shifter, sport suspension (shocks, springs, sways), full aero kit, dedicated track wheels/tires.

Kinda bummed though.....the wife and I are moving back to San Antonio next spring and did some research and there is NO tracks in the area! BUMMER! I was going to add another Porsche to the garage since the wife is a track junkie now and she wanted me to get my own car. Decided on a GT3 but since learning there are no tracks in S.TX. I have since decided to add a SL next spring when the new V8 is released.

San Antonio sucks pretty much, why not Houston? Or better yet Sugar Land.

I agree, knowledge is the best mod.

Not a big fan of H-Town. Traffic sucks! Humid as hell! And just too darn big. San Antonio may be the 8th largest city in the US but you wouldn't be able to tell. Very small town feel. Plus 2 major reasons. (1) family in SA and Austin, and (2) Spurs! Can't wait to grab some great season tix!!!

No man, whose talking about the track.......almost nobody on here races like that. I agree with Ricky my real world is on the highway ramps passing and from a roll quick sprints at 3am deserted roads. Plus I was talking about after you mod the 388hp engine it would be sweet enough to hang and depending on what you do even beat an M3 straight line. Who the heck has the time and money to risk taking their brand new 90k Sl500 to the track.......Not even if I owned an sl65 renttech would I track it. I would just pimp the hell out of it and walk around like my ish don't stink because it wouldn't if I owned that car LOL! I would have nothing more to prove. I mean it doesn't get any better than a modded sl65 ultimate benz unless you get the SLR andthen who would eve track that. I would not even want anyone to breath on my sl much less an slr. So point being I'm talking about modding potential on that 388hp engine. Then you would really be kickin in an sl500 without paying premums of sl55/65 and finally sl500 would get some hp respect on the street cause right now sl500 is all about the roadster pimp lifestyle.........with 388hp you can now mess with some of the big guns as far as highway sprints....NOT TRACK!

Well then that is where you and I would differ. What in the world would you want to own a SL65 Renntech or SLR which is built for the track and not even take it there. FYI...tracking a car is not racing it, it is learning the limits of the car and driving it to those limits. It's a shame that "pimping" your car is your dream but then I respect that because you are totally honest about it.

BTW..you should want to own a specific car because you enjoy it or aspire to own it one day and then can, not because you have to show others that there is "nothing left to prove". What does that mean anyway. Quite the arrogant take and one that is why so many high end car owners are steroetyped because of the few that act like that.

But, like I said, no sense in judging you, I respect your stance and all others which is what makes this forum (and others) so great......DIVERSITY. If not, then we would all have the same car, bone stock, and drive it like little old ladies

Happy Motoring.
