? on GLASS REPLACEMENT

This is a little off topic for the SL forum, but a lot of knowledge in here so I am going to post anyways. First of all, my glass is NOT broke on my new SL , but I did get a rock that hit the front windshield on my S500 and it does have a crack in it

As far as replacement glass goes, what do I need to look out for. I suspect not all glass will be the same as the original installed factory glass. I thought I remembered something about some kind of special coating or tint to the original glass. How do I make sure I get what I should have?

Stephen & LV Dell:

Just make sure you request factory replacement glass; you'll be able to identify this by the SEKURIT brand info. usually located on the lower driver's side of the windshield. The SEKURIT info seal/stamp will contain all the specific codes etc. for your type of glass.

Hope this was helpful to you both.

The man is right.

All MB dealers have exact factory replacements. Even some glass companies too.

Bottom line you can get the exact window you now have, only without the crack.

In UK we use Autoglass etc.

HI,

Interesting - in my SLK I have had items attracted to my screen twice in a year causing it to have huge cracks. As part of my insurance I have to simply pay £50 and a company comes and replaces the window - all they need is the model and make. They claim the rest of the costs from the insurance company. Do they not have anything like that in the US?

We do, insurance covers it most of the time.
Like I said though, most of the time.

But it's not about the money, it's about getting a good part for most of us here.

It can depend on your state as well... In FL it's state law that your insurance has to pay to replace the windshield; but it's not that way here in GA.

A good part...

I accept it has to be a good part - but surely they are not going to supply a bad windscreen? After all there are laws as to specific requirements to do with windscreens. Also if it happens to crack a lot (mine has done twice in a year because i drive so much) then so long as it is a decent one does it matter?

By "good part", Ricky means an OEM, or original equipment manufacturer supplied part, as opposed to an aftermarket or copy part which might not fit properly.

Mercedes doesn't make the glass of course, but will fit glass with an MB logo and part number. When I've had windshields replaced in the past, I've got the exact same piece of glass but without the MB logo, not a problem.
