Question USED SL55 AMG, what are the things to watch out?

All AMG and SL EXPERTS OUT THERE, I need help. What are the things to watch out to make sure that the SL55 (USED) am looking for won't be a car that will always go to the dealer due to repairs? Things like electronic problems, roofs leaking, like one of the members who had numerous numbers of problem with his SL. Thanks and I really appreciate those who would really tell me what things to really check.

What year is it?
2003 was the first year. Most problems are sorted out, if you get one with some, a trip or two would fix the problems. I would know..

2004 are a bit better, and after that they are pretty much mint with a few bad apples here and there.

SL500 and A-CLASS
If you do not have a good dealer, forget about it. I have to take a 6 hour round trip to the Nashville dealer to fix my car, because my local dealer cannot fix a light bulb.

Both will serve the same purpose pretty much.
tiggerfink brings up a really really good point. If your dealer is crappy, even normal stuff going out will be a hassle.

ok I'll consider that, but for example, say I really found a good dealer, a used car is a used car and can't be compared to a brand new one right? with this, what parts of the car should I really check before getting one?

none
Just pull the service history on whatever SL55 you are looking at and run a Carfax too.

Report

I don't know the exact name of the report, I think it is Netstar report, but any dealer can pull a report on a car with it's VIN. It will show a complete detail of what has been going on with the car at Mercedes Dealerships and how many times it has been in for service related items. It's a great way to see what's been going on.

SL55 AMG
I don't think any of us are finding that things are wearing prematurely or proving problemmatic with age. The problems with the SL have always been manufacturing quality control related and stem from when the car was made.

the blue man has it right. although i ended up buyinga new sl600, after reading the posts here and on other boards, it became clear the mb boys had rushed their new design to the market a little to quickly. i don't think i would buy an '03sl anything. when i was consideringa 55, by definition, it is a play car. i prefered a late '04 because of the warranty. it would also have to have low miles and to the bst of my ability be able to assess relatively easy driving.

If you have not already, try posting this in the SL55 section too.
