SL/R230: Mercedes SL v Porsche 911
#29
I was 100% sure a 997 would be my next purchase.....it is the superior handler and is a true sports car....
But the SL is a SL...
SL's will always be more money (base compared to base) will always be the top of the Mercedes food chain and will always just scream class, stature and wealth, not that the P-car doesn't.
IMO Porsche makes way to much money off their cars and the HP readings??? WOW!
Isnt it funny how the cayman was detuned to fit right in between the boxster and 911....and quite amusing that the cayman (even with its stiffer chasis and 996 type engine) should really cost less then a boxster S? Not that Merc is any better....can you say E class with stiffer suspension and new body = a CLS. The CLS is awesome though and was my 3rd choice after the above two.
You guys probably know more about this than me but I have a feeling that the P-car to have will be the 998....
So my vote as a P-car lover is for the r230 SL until a 997 turbo cab is out, but from seeing the sptshots, I will probably wait until the 998...
plus chicks LOVE the SL....not to be shallow
I am in LA (armpit of CA) so I have a partial excuse!

Yeah youre Whit SL is sick....I would probably sell the 996...although its sweet as well...its just that although the value is ok...the 997 is still taking its toll om 996 resale.
I've had 5 black cars so black just wasn't an option....silver and white w/ AMG accents were the 2 I decided on....I went with silver but white with rims is insane....it would be hard to decide again. The tuners are says white is the new black...I saw a white SL65 today on rims...O M G...it was freaking nuts!

I have a 2005 997S cabriolet and a 2006 SL500. I like them both, but feel they are entirely different kind of cars. The Porsche is a sports car and the SL is a GT. Porsche pluses are handling, braking, engine sound and thrill factor. SL pluses are comfort, quiet, style. Love them both, but they are not directly comparable. Off this topic but a surprise to me, the Porsche has a much larger trunk (plus you can use the back seat area if needed). The SL trunk is very small. Of course Porsche had to do away with a spare tire in order to increase their trunk size. I suppose the SL could add some space if it didn't have a spare.

My first post on this site:
I've been looking at the SL500 and the 997-S for a couple of months now; still can't decide.
I've never owned an SL (yet), but have owned three 911s ('84, '87, and '90), plus 3 M-Bs.
WRT depreciating values for an SL500 and the 997 over time: I believe leasing companies are the real experts regarding depreciation, and it seems both cars will depreciate about 60% from their MSRP over a 4-yr period. I was a little surprised in that I assumed the SL would hold its value more strongly than the Porsche. You can do some residual vaule comparisons very easily at leasecompare.

How much louder is the 911 over the SL? R&T rates the 911 at 74dB.

This is my first post here too.....
I had a 911 GT3 for about 18 months, sold it recently and just bought an SL. There is really no comparison between them, they are such totally different machines, and they both succeed admirably in their mission statements. I'd say try both, or even better get both! The 911 will always be a bit more sporting, and the SL will always be more comfortable, and feel more expensive. My one big surprise with my 911 was though it worked like a dream the interior felt really cheap.
I haven't owned an MB since my 560SL many moons ago, and having just covered my first 200 miles in the SL I'm blown away by what an awesome cruiser it is, I just love it, the SL class has really grown up good.
