Dvd Mp3
Back on 1-21-05 kknight posted this about his/her 05 SL65:
Has anyone tried playing MP3-encoded DVDs in the 6xCD Changer, and does it work OK?
If this works, then with the in-dash CD player you could have around 7,000 tunes available at your fingertips -- that would be a real jukebox on wheels!

This works great and is even better than an iPod because the song names are displayed in the dash, songs can be changed via steering wheel, etc. A DVD can hold something like 1,000 songs, and if you put them in folders, these come across as playlists on the Nav screen. I can post pictures and more details if anyone is interested.

I haven't tried the changer since the one disc holds enough but I doubt the changer will recognize a dvd. You never know though, I am not near my car to try it out.

I tried it with the cd changer with the DVD mp3's and the system does not recongize the disc.
So it does not work with CD's with mp3 or DVD's with mp3s in the changer but does work in dash with either one.

You guys are talking about the 05' model DVD Nav system right? I have the 04' CD-ROM Nav system... does not work on that right?

But we're not done yet. Next, we need to check this out on a 2006 SL because the new sales brochure says the 6-disc CD changer will play MP3 CDs, but it says nothing about whether MP3 CDs will work in the single in-dash CD player. So, we now need someone to try an MP3 DVD in the 6xCD changer as well as in the in-dash CD player, and also test both players again with an MP3 CD, then report the results.
Hey, this is fun stuff.

2006 Sl500 DVD MP#
I have 2006 Sl500 build date 11/05. The single in-dash player plays DVD MP3 as well as CD MP3. The cd changer plays only CD MP3. I use in-dash player for DVD MP3 and was able to fit my complete music collection on one DVD disk. I was happy with the sound quality till I saw Reus audio system (Reusaudio.com) at the LA Auto show. But I feel that $3000.00 for a car stereo system is too much.

To summarize:
For 2005 SLs, MP3 CDs and MP3 DVDs will work OK in the in-dash single CD player. The 6xCD player will not read MP3 CDs nor MP3 DVDs. Thanks again to jonnyml500.

As soon as I get a 2005 SL, I will have a friendly, subliminally persuasive conversation with my M-B service manager. Please do not try this yourself -- I'm a highly trained and experienced persuader.

This is certainly an improvement, I'd love to be able to play my MP3 collection and use the steering wheel buttons to scroll, and have the song info displayed in-dash and on the console. I have a 2003, so my best option is the iPOD plugged into the aux input.
The one downside on the DVD MP3, though, is that you lose the Nav system, right? Since Mercedes, in their infinite wisdom, put the Nav disk (which one would rarely change) in-dash instead of in the trunk, and put the changer (which you do want to change) safely out of reach :-)
