BYO SL500 roadster

MBUSA has updated the BYO page for the SL500. I guess the new colors have been added like Pewter metallic, and now Black birds eye maple is available as an alternative to the standard Burr. The sport package option has magically disappeared, and so the interior colors are available in charcoal, designo charcoal and ash. What happened to the berry red? And the beige?

Maybe they are in the middle of an update, or berry red has been dropped? At it stands, the choice of interior color is not very wide, you can have gray or .....err, gray.

So has the sport model been dropped then or are they having troubles over at MBUSA.com?

Special Option charge

Despite the delisting of special option alternatives, the website still refers to special option charge for their being ordered. Methinks this means that these special options (such as berry red interior) still remain orderable, but it has to be done with the dealer. The website people probably found buyers were frustrated to go to their local MBZ dealer and find the absence of availability of special optioned vehicles that appeared to available on the web. As a group, Mercedes dealers are ultra conservative when it comes to pre-ordering cars for inventory. It is amazing how little variety in color choice one usually finds on any dealer's lot for any particular model. In California you can typically have desert silver or desert silver and there is rarely any choice of interior colors within a single body color. I suspect most dealers still have bad memories of an out of fashion color sitting for months eating up flooring charges.

Or maybe this says more about the buyers of Mercedes Cars rather than the sellers? "Just paint it and they will come" apparently is not a motto the dealers ascribe to today.
