Half the power, half the torque and 90% of the weight of the SL55. This will be no sports car but I guess we always knew that. 7.3 seconds 0 - 62mph. The de-spec'ing leads to a rather dull standard spec - non-metallic, black cloth upholstery, standard "aluminium look" centre console and no wood. The biggest item being removed is ABC.
The new price list is interesting reading. The cost of the designo options is boggling- $3k for a stone centre console, $6k for some of the leather combox, $1350 for the alcantara roof lining, though I notice it's a no-cost option with the exclusive leather.
The standard German spec excludes things like CD changer, Command and by the time you spec up an SL350 and an SL500, the percentage difference is relatively small, so, gas consumption aside, why not go for the V8?
Other items of interest: SL350 has a 6 speed gearbox, panorama roof on the German price list for the first time, 1 blank column remaining, should this be titled "Reserved for SL600"?
Bottom line: With the CLK cabriolet coming along, why have they introduced this car when there's such a problem obtaining one of the existing models? Will it make an already bad situation a whole lot worse?

they removed ABC on the 350? IMHO, ABC is the best feature on the SL500. I love it. Makes this 4000 pig feel like a sports-like car.

The new designo stone trim...is exactly that Stone Trim....Mercedes has perfected a technique for micro slicing granite and encasing it in resin and using it place of wood.
They are offering two colors in Europe: Viking Green and Labrador Blue Pearl...
It first appeared on the CL at the 1999 Geneva Auto Show

Yes, it's for real, listed under "Zierteile" in their price list!
It looks like the aluminum look is the base, wood costs $290 extra for the SL350, no cost option for the SL500; stone costs $3300 extra for the SL350, $3000 for the SL500. There's also a designo wood option costing $1050 in (if my German is up to it) bird's eye maple.
I've seen pictures of the stone in some brochures, certainly exotic but whether I could live with the inside of my car looking like my bathroom, I don't know.
Must be a problem knowing what to make non-standard in the SL350 to create blue sky between it and the SL500. Personally, I think a hand cranked vario roof would have been interesting, with a prize for the first person to break the 10 second barrier.
