SL/R230: Top Up Or Down

Top Up Or Down
This is the first convertible I've had. I was wondering about leaving the top down when arriving at various places, such as work (basement office parking) a mall, the grocery store, etc. Apart from the weather issue, do most people put their top up or leave it down?

Around here, I generally see quite a few convertables parked with their tops down. Mall lots, restaurants, the gym, etc. I usually don't worry about it and have never had a problem.

i figured it was gonna happen again so now i just keep everything in the trunk and superglued the glovebox shut.. ghetto yes.. but i dont' want to worry or deal with having to put the top up all the time when parked outside... if there's nothing to take or steal, nothing to worry about..

Cant we get a motion sensor inside our cars? I know
someone here in Orlando had steve install a motion
sensor on his SLK 55 so it worked with the alarm on
his car. Just something I have been curious about, so
I can leave my top down.

Ya, I leave the top down just about anywhere/anytime around here, but when I'm down in San Diego I keep it up when I park. Just a different scene down there.

i have to replace the entire glovebox since they completely f**ked it up.. so might as well just superglue it shut until they try to break in again and/or i try to sell it..
it is just a car.. the piece of mind in not worrying about it makes the ghetto factor worthwhile... :>

Hit the key fob open button 3 times at one sec intervals and the top opens. Hit the lock button 3 times and it closes. You can do it from as far as the key will reach. You can also put up the windows if you hit the buttons a few more times. One guy on the SLK forum would do it from his office window when it would rain while everyone else would have to run out there to put up their tops.

That was my point.

Always up. I'm not stupid enough to try to invite idiots, not even infront of my house.
I don't know about how it is when you're older, but after coming out of highschool I know there are a lot of kids that don't like me, and some that probably even hate me (not for who I am, but for who I represent with my background, lifestyle, whatever).

Top UP when you park
Unless you are in your own home or a very trusted area, why would you not spend the 15-20 seconds it takes to put up your hard top? That is exactly why you have a power retractable hard top.

The reason for leaving the top down is because the car looks so good with it down.

SO TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was having lunch at the beach a few weeks ago and when the valet pulled up my car, THERE WAS THE LARGEST BIRD CRAP I HAD EVER SEEN!!!!
It hit mainly just behind the driver's seat, but it splashed everywhere from the dash to the passenger door. It took 5 or 6 damp paper towels to clean the majority of it up.
It was rediculous! Not sure how big this bird must have been, but I have a feeling it was angry (and not feeling well).
Now when I go to Las Brisas the valets give me a hard time.
Man that crap was big.

That Settles It For Me
That story scared the crap out of me. The top always goes up, especially in light of the fact we have so many Canadian Geese vacationing here.

Up. Always up. The top is too easy and too quick to put up - even when parked in my garage.
I do it for the security but also so it doesn't sit open and collect unnecessary dust and dirt - or worse, have the whole interiour turn yellow during our pollen season.
