Valve Noise

My 04 SL500 with 16374 miles suddenly developed a serious valve noise problem yesterday. The noise increases when I step on the gas whether I'm moving or not. Fortunately, I was very close to home and I was able to stop the car.

It's the kind of noise older V8s used to have when the lifters got screwed up.

The car was recently filled with 91 octane and I suppose there could be water in the gas or a malfunction which delivered the wrong octane.

Has anybody had this problem before? I'm going to have it towed to the dealer if I can't find the cause.

What kind of gas did you use? What Gas Station? Is it like a knocking noise?

It's an independent station called Encon so I don't know what wholesaler they get their gas from. It's listed as 91 octane. The noise is more like the valves "floating" than knocking.

Thats odd though your car shouldnt be making valve floating noises from gas? If the gas isnt as good as it should be than your motor will knock. What else have you done to it before you started noticing it?

Oil Change? So it started after you filled up on gas? Have you used this gas station before?

Thanks for the response. No oil change. I filled it with gas on Monday and it started suddenly late Friday afternoon. I've had the top down most of the week when I drove it so I would have noticed the noise immediately.

Thought I'd let everyone know what happened. I towed the SL to the dealer and they were perplexed. They called several hours later and said the catalytic converter had failed and was causing the valve noise. I've never heard of this before but I'm picking up the car tomorrow and will let you know.

From a catalytic converter failer would cause valve noise??? Interesting. Well as long as the noise is gone and they took care of the issue....and hopefully nothing out of your pocket.
