Why the input hole?

Looked in my '03 SL500 glove compartment for the input hole for an iPod. There it was. Plugged in the iPod and...nothing. Dealer says my car does not have the ability to connect iPod, etc. If so...why the hole?

You have to press the SVC button on the left side of the Command Unit, toggle down to the bottom option (I forget the name.) and choose it. Then you will see Aux input as the last option on the next screen. This should do it.

If not, there is a problem with your AUX input, but mine works fine.

What the dealer says was I mean, if its an AUX input, the system wouldn't know whether you plug in an iPod or MP3 player. All it knows is that whether there's sound signal coming from that input.

I haven't try mine before and hope you can get it working.

That input jack is a standard mini stereo jack - you can plug any audio device into it - ipod, portable cd player, etc. I use it for the iPod and it works great. Just enable it through the SVC button on the COMAND unit.

iPod compatibility

This is great news. I picked up my new car Wednesday, and the dealer told me there is no way to play my iPod through the car's stereo. Thanks very much for this info.

Unfortunately, the 07's do not have the AUX input in the glove box. I believe only the 03-04 SL's came with that.

It seems kind of random. My '06 C has it but my '06 S doesn't.

They did stop putting the AUX jack on the car in 05. But mine works great.

Thanks for the replies! My dealer still has the car so I have not been able to try it yet. BTW do you have to go through the search process each time you want to plug in the iPod or is it a one time thing?

It is like choosing CD or radio. You have to choose the AUX each time you want to use it.

Aux input...

So with the 07 model year, there is no way to connect an iPod? Bummer.

I believe there is now a Mercedes iPod connection kit for use with the newest MB systems. Check with your dealer on this.

You can get a radio-transmitter w/ iPod, find an unused frequency in the Fm's and listen via the radio..

Works like a charm! I took the time to "educate" my service rep on how this works at least now they can help others out!

I use my Ipod through the AUX plug in my 2003 SL500 , it works good...

The part I hate though is that I have to set the base and treble for the AUX input every time...

Same here - the bass & treble reset to zero every time the COMAND is powered down (just for AUX, though - other modes FM, CD, SAT all stay where I set them). I thought this was a problem with just mine, but it sounds like it's inherent in the design.

I just did that yesterday with my sirius unit. Love it,
now I have sat radio in the SL which is great. Does
anyone know of any other power sources than the
ashtray? I have my radar plugged into that one. Or
if anyone knows where/how to hardwire into the car
so I get power when teh ignition turns on.

Dumping iPod connectivity...

So they had it, and ended it!?

Not clever. What could the rationale possibly have been. Think how many more iPods are out there today as compared with when they did have it...

As most input devices have adjustable sound settings (even the cheapest MP3 players have mini-graphic equalyzers) then it seems logical to have the COMAN system set itself to flat each time so that the device makes the running and COMAND can be adjusted only when needed.

I think there's one in the trunk but that will not help much>
