SL 350 R230 (3.7L with AMG Speedshift autobox)
Good post, I am toying between 19"s or 20" too... Definately staggered .
Currently I have the stock 18" AMG alloys with 285 x 35 x 18 rears with a 15mm spacer to push them out flush and 255 x 40 x 18's up front. with 10mm spacers.

20" rims

I have the 20 offsets I might SL500 and with the Florida roads I would never do it again it's not worth the aggravation of how many tires and rims I have damaged in the past year or two. I would settle for 18 or 19 s with a much better ride that will still look good!

Old Fart Needs Softer Ride

Just bought a 75,000 mile 2003 SL500 with OEM AMG 18" staggered wheels and worn tires. Wheels are nice looking but ride is really bad, jars my teeth out. Car also has had ABC replaced with coil-over shocks. I am thinking of going back to the "base" 17" rims with "comfort" tires. Not interested in cool looks or performance. Question: Can I expect an improvement in ride and should they be "staggered" ?. Apparently in 2003 the base 17" wheels were not staggered.

Also the nice AMG 18" wheels will be for sale (Springfield, Mo)

Any comments appreciated.

Your rough ride is not the 18" wheels and tires, it is the coilover suspension.
You may want to save your money and flip the car, or spend the money to switch it back to factory.

The ride quality will improve, but it may be to only a small degree.

The original 17" rims are not staggered.

If you value ride comfort as I do, then I agree with the previous post that you should convert your car back to ABC or sell it.

you can find tire measurement charts that will tell you all the specifications of sizes for any tire. then you can compare the difference in inches or mm

I wouldn't ride on 20s for no money. Not enough rubber between the tire and the rim to be safe. Enjoy the look but not at 120mph when you hit a piece of trailer recap.
