SL/R230: engine upgrades?

engine upgrades?
What kinds of engine upgrades/tuning, if any, would someone recommend for the sl500? How much would something like that cost? Or would it be smarter just to sell my car and buy the sL55?

I agree. If you care at all about resale value, don't even think about messing with the engine by upgrading. Both the SL600 and SL55 will offer you much more performance, wrapped in a different driving experience.
The SLR is a completely different car which offers a bit more power than these cars but a big reduction in weight, supposedly available next year, built in the UK not Germany in conjunction with McLaren to tie in with their Formula One effort. Hopefully, the engine will last longer than the McLaren-Mercedes which blew up at the US Grand Prix in Indiannapolis yesterday.
Expensive car though, high $200's, and with a car in such limited production, you will not be able to go into any Mercedes dealer to get it fixed as you can with the SL and it will be a nightmare to insure. It's also not a convertible.
For me, the SL55 is all I need.
