2004 SL500 Malfunction Question
Hi all,
I have a 2004 SL500 that I got about a year or so ago (yes, it had one previous owner). I have had a "1 malfunction" showing up on the dashboard all this time. I took it to the dealership a couple times in regard to that, and each time they have told me that the malfunction is due to the phone not being found/connected. I am assuming that the previous owner had a phone installed with the car.
The dealership claims they cannot remove the error message. That doesn't sound very feasable to me. Any advice that any of you might be able to offer would be greatly appreciated! I love the car, but HATE the damn message every time I turn the engine off! Ugh!

The error is caused by the SOS system no longer being supported on the older SL's. The problem is the system that is in these cars is analog and not digital. At this point I have no answer to how to remove the error message. The dealer told me the same thing that there is nothing they can do. It is really annoying.

You need to find an indy with stardiagnose who knows how to play with the
system. I found one in Orlando to take off the message for me, but it cost
$200 in shop time for them to do it.

I had the same message on my vehicle, I was told by a tech that MB had recently changed their policy on this "1 malfunction". I took my vehicle into Fletcher Jones Mercedes in Las Vegas and they contacted MB then performed the change for me... $68 later I'm a happy camper. This was within this past year.

It is simple and quick to disable this message with the Star Diagnosis System. One goes to the "Troubleshooting by means of complaints or symptoms" menu for the instrument cluster and follow the procedures under "Messages from the emergency call system..."
