2005 SL550

Do what CY says...
So when one talks about adding oversized rims the aesthetics are debatable but degraded performance and/or comfort is not. Also check the weight increase on those rims as the last thing the SL needs is an increase in unsprung weight at the corners.
BTW, if you're running 19s or 20s without TPMS make sure you regularly check your tire pressure more regularly as my experience has been it's much harder to see low pressure on account of the absurdly thin sidewalls.
At this point I have had 4 different wheel setups on my R230 and my final verdict and personal opinion is that the car drove best in most situations with 18 inch staggered AMG wheels which came stock, but for looks and feel (smooth roads only) correct offset Lowenhart 20's with a 305 in the rear were my final choice mostly because they transformed the look of the car into something I really loved. The car now seems to get about three times the attention while sporting the ultra deep dish Lowenharts and gets front row valet status even in LA which is crazy considering how common the SL is out here.

HEY MURTAZA ..THERE IS NO SL500 IN 06, THE 06 MODEL WAS UPDATED TO SL550 WITH A SMOOTER SHIFTERS..BUT YOUR PROFILE STATED A 06 SL500..HONESTLY I THINK YOU'RE A WINDOW SHOPPER...SO GET YOU FACTS STRAIGHT...IF YOU REALLY LOVE TO DEBATE THIS ISSUE....IM PERFORMACE DRIVEN SO IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A F1, EGEAR, OR A BI-TURBO..YOU ARGUMENT IS POINTLESS...NOW THAT REAL TALK FROM ATLANTA, WHERE WE RIDE ON THEM THANGS EVERY DAY...THE SL IS THE CHEAPEST CAR THAT I HAVE...NOTHING LESS THAN 150K...........THATS THE RULES.SO DONT' BREAK IT.................
runs 255/30/20 on R230's with no filing needed even if the car is lowered and 305/25/20 in the rear with no rubbing if and only if you utilize exact offset wheels made for the SL and not some crap aftermarket wheels with the wrong bore/offset etc.....also a 285 or 305 in the rear will both wear out at about the same speed...Ive had both.

Sure am anxious to see one of those 05/06 SL 550's.

You don't know **** about anything, go away troll. The SL550 is an 07 model, not 06.
And for **** sakes, get off the caps lock button you jackass.

Still have them both mounted. Perhaps new PS are dofferen't than mine? but its just my view having driven both on the same car.
... just bought original SLR RIMS. A company in Germany modifies, exports luxury german cars for the rolyal families of Quatar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Bahrain.
One of their customers just ordered a SLR , and wanted 722 RIMS. I was able to snap up these for my SL (2650 Euros). The original price is 9'000 Euros.
Am I nuts?......well I'll be waiting until spring to mount them.

But on a side note prefer the 19inch look. 20 is too big for the car. For real.
First, 255/30, not 255/35. Yes, it makes a difference.
And regarding the previous post about 19"s
s, they just don't have the visual impact that the 20's do. With quality tires (read: Michelins), the ride quality is very reasonable. Problem is a bunch of these f and Fr's want to use Nexens, or Toyo's or a Japanese or Lorean tire, which doesn't doesn't translate well to an SL.
Good luck in your quest.
Yo.

Oh wellTomayto, Tomahtoe lets call the whole thing scoff.
19/20 it's irrelevant. Tire size and going biggest possible is not the best decision but there again it's merely one mans ceiling is another mans floor
It's all personal preference. The only (IMHO) thing I'm going to comment on is 305. Unless you're driving TT V12 you "are" going appear like a poser
FWIW; You want to fill up the wheelwells? Use spacers.
19 or 20 is totally up to the individual and please stop worrying about what others think. Do it with your own individual taste. Not what's hot in the latest vlog but what you truly like.

It for sure is a lot of experts here that really do not know the fact that Mercedes have written down bigger wheels for the SL, R230
My car have 19x8,5 wheels up front with 255-35-19 tires and 19x9,5 with 285-30 19 tires at the rear and this is according to what Mercedes says.
Check the picture attached that is from the Owners Manual
This makes me wonder if people does not read the owners manual for their Mercedes SL R230 class
If this was a bad wheel tire combo i do you really think Mercedes would have these factory wheel and tire sizes in the Owners Manual?
The picture below is from the Owners Manual for my car under: Technical data - Mixed tire sizes. I also have where it says 19x8,5 wheels with 255-35-19 tires up front and 19x9,5 with 285-30 19 tires at the rear. This is also from Mercedes
The dimension on my wheels and tires is: 19x8,5 wheels with 255-35-19 tires up front and 19x10 with 285-30 19 tires at the rear and they are perfect to drive on both on small gravel roads, highways and turny fast roads
I really like how the tires fill out the wheel arches with the Kahn wheels in the picture below

deciding factors:
1. appearance - I like the sporty VIP looks, however I don't want to over do it and make it look ghetto.
2. Practicality - i drive it daily...
3. Comfort - this is probably a no brainer. 19's. but just want to see what you guys think.
your suggestions/recommendations is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
