2003 (R230 )gas tank manufacture defect?????????

I have an 2003 sl500 . There is a strange noise (clink or an lose object)sound
in the area of the back panel. After doing search in the forums , I think it due to the gas tank defect ( something lose inside the gas tank) . The sound get worst when the gas level is 1/2 full. I did complain the about the noise and the trunk lose 2 time while the car still have warranty . I did not know that it came from the gas tank. The dealer said it was no problem. Now, the car out of warranty and have 49,000 miles. Do you think the dealer should cover that?( replace the gas tank). Dose anyone know the gas tank for that year has problem due to manufacture defect?. Is there any resource i should know about?. Thanks you for yours advices.

yes i had mine replaced under warranty. since you have previous claims under warrranty it should be covered by mb. it takes a lot of work to remove and replace. remove parts if suspension, axle, and i think interior.

Tank

It is more than likely the tank, I think the way I heard it the Baffles break in the tank. Luckily for Mercedes a lot of people drive with the radio on loud or the top down, preventing us from hearing the problem.

Mine on my SL600 was replaced and even after the same noise was there, they came back and put some kind of insulation around it. I would highly recommend having them put the insulation around yours when they take your car apart to replace the tank. Could save you from having to do it twice.

One solution is to keep the tank atleast 3/4 full. I never go below that and have never heard any noise. So I don't know if I have the problem. Also its better to keep the tank full.

I'm retired and I keep fill-up both my cars at between 100-150 miles on a tank. Keeps moisture out and that is about once a week for each vehicle in good weather when I'm driving the SL.
