SL/R230: AMG mufflers, how to make the sound louder?

The SL500 has a very restrictive merge pipe just behind the 2 main cats, this thing is pinched together reducing each pipe to around a 1/2" and merges the gas flow taking away the uneven V8 rumble.
When I changed to an AMG system I cut this section out and replaced with individual 2.5" pipes.
It's not overly loud but the rumble is great and flows much more freely.

You can just make out the internal merge in the second pic.

It's all very unscientific but I have a stretch of road between 2 roundabouts (don't think you guys have them) where I can measure gains/loses from my ham fisted efforts. The upshot is 10mph quicker over the same stretch so I guess I'm a regular genius (or just got lucky which is more likely
