Wheel Offset and Fitment

I am looking for a new set of wheels and I see a lot of CLS wheels with a 30mm front and 33mm rear offset being advertised as fitting the SL. I think the SL has 35mm front and 40mm rear.

1) Will these wheels fit the SL without brake and/or fender clearance issues?
2) Does the smaller offset mean they sit closer to the brake and center of the car?
3) Can I just use spacers to get these back out a bit farther like the stock ones?

Thanks

Wait I don't get something...which way does the wheels move as the numbers get smaller? I thought a smaller number means it sits closer to the hub and not as wide then why would the 63 have a narrower stance, or do I have this backwards?

Also will 275/40/18 tires works for the back instead of 285/35/18?

the lower the offset,,,the further out it will sit,,,,,lower offsets have more aggressive looks

Generally, the convention used is such that the more positive the number, the further the wheel moves in. A wheel with 0 offset will stick out more than one with +15 offset.

Hope this helps.
