SL/R230: New SL600
New SL600 unveiled at the Detroit Autoshow:
The SL600 joins the redesigned SL 500 that debuted as a 2003 model, all with a retractable hardtop that converts the car from a coupe to a roadster in just 16 seconds.
Coming to the U.S. later this year as a 2004 model, the SL600 is powered by a 5.5-liter V12 with two turbochargers that produces 493 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque at as low as 1800 rpm. The SL600 has virtually the same power as the SL55 AMG.

Are looks deceiving me or does anyone else agree that the Nav screen on the pictured SL600 is wider than than on the SL500 suggesting the changeover to the DVD Nav system will be on the SL600 from its inception? Anyone getting to see the SL600 in person at the Detroit show please let us know. (Take your tape measure! lol)
i would think the SL600 has more power because of the extra torque would it not?

why would anyone buy the car if they are the same horsepower?Just to say u have a 12 cylinder vs 8, or will it be smoother ride because of the engine
The SL55 is the "I've got the sportiest Mercedes" thing, the SL600 is "I've got the best, most over-the-top Mercedes" thing.
The same relative differences as between the S55 and the S600.
It's the same size as the 6.5" widescreen.
Whatever small degree it looses in handling versus the 55, it will more than make up in ride quality.
The SL 600 is claimed to accelerate from 0-100kmh in 4.7 seconds, which is the same claim for the SL 55. That means that both of them do 0-60 mph in roughly 4.5 sec. Why have several people insisted that it is slower, i do not understand!

Haven't seen any prices for the SL600 but if you look at the prices for S and CL, the SL600 will be likely more expensive than the SL55, which makes it, the SL55, even more of a bargain compared to the competition.
now imagine that engine in a car more lighter than the S-class? Say, an SL?
Motortrend just tested the SL 55 in 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds, the V12 is gonna be even faster!!!!!
How much faster can they make these cars for the general public before some one drives 150mph plus and kills al bunch of people. It amazes me that there are over a dozen cars in production which have inexcess of 400 hp. When will it stop! Even with gas aprices at these levels the cars and trucks keep geting bigger and faster. Will some one come out with a production car with 1000hp and warranty it for 4 years? We shall see.
everyone seems to be talking about power power power, im wondering how well an SL600 stops, as it turns out the SL55 has worse braking distances attributed to its extra weight, SL600 would prob be even heavier right?

If there is one feature of the Bugatti EB 16-4 Veyron that is absolutely unique, it is surely the innovative W16 light alloy engine. It has two exceptionally narrow-angle cylinder blocks each containing eight cylinders (the VR principle); these two blocks are mounted at a 90-degree included angle on a common crankcase. The W16 unit, installed in the mid-engine position ahead of the car's rear axle, develops a monumental 736 kW (1001 bhp) at 6000/min, yet is only 710 millimeters long and 767 mm wide. The 'W' layout not only permits these compact dimensions despite the high swept volume and power output, but also makes the entire engine exceptionally rigid.
Four turbochargers on the 7,993 cc engine help it to develop a maximum torque of 1,250 Newton-meters (922 lbs-ft of torque), a figure not even remotely matched by any other passenger car. The charge air passes through two intercoolers mounted above the cylinder heads. Fuel-air mixture reaches the engine and exhaust gas exits through no fewer than 64 valves. These are actuated through roller cam followers by four continuously variable overhead camshafts.
The camshaft settings are varied by a continuous electro-hydraulic system, which takes effect in all engine operating situations. In order to coordinate all the W16 engine's operating parameters perfectly, two computers that exchange data with each other are used for each bank of cylinders.
The generous wheelbase of 2,700 millimeters ensures ample space inside the car, this example of which is trimmed in 'silk'-colored leather.
For an unbeatable listening experience inside the car, a high-end sound system from Dieter Burmester, the Berlin-based manufacturer of hi-fi equipment, is fitted. In close cooperation with the Bugatti development team, the ideal location of all the components was determined when the bodyshell was developed, in order to ensure optimum function, music quality and design appeal.
Two one-carat diamonds form part of the interior decor of the study car exhibited in Geneva, and act as points of focus for its exceptional luxury. These 'Spirit' diamonds, as they are called, are mounted on the speedometer needle and at the center of the 'powermeter', a dial that displays how much of the engine's available power is being used. Cut with 16 sunray facets, these diamonds symbolize the power and energy of the 16-cylinder engine that forms the technical heart of the Bugatti EB 16-4 Veyron.
These 'Spirit' diamonds were specially cut by the Dr. Ulrich Freiesleben diamond workshops, using an innovative technique to obtain the 16 full-radius facets.
