Exactly a week ago I took delivery on 2003 Sl 500. The car had 24 miles on it when I got it. I put about 250 miles since I got the car. So far, the car is a delight to drive: It is very luxurious and comfortable and fast. The comfort package is nice but the pulsations are somewhat weak. The “biggest” problem so far is the strange rattling noise behind the driver’s seat when the car goes over a bump or cobblestones. At first I thought it was CD magazine in the CD changer, but the noise persisted after I removed the magazine. Did anybody else noticed this noise and have you been able to pinpoint the source?

My sl55 goes to the dealer tomorrow for some anti rattle mods.
There are a number of mods listed on the Mercedes WIS system to stop rattles from the roof mechanism in the boot.
My dealer has ordered all of the parts for the mods (mostly rubber washers and spacers) and a special tool to adjust the roof mech.
I am away for a few days as of Sunday but I'll post the outcome on my return

Let me know if this fixes your problem.
I have the exact same noise coming from behind on the drivers side.

I had rattles on mine sold it after 5,000 miles the rattles are the interior panels of the roof, a common problem my mb tech told me.
They never really solved mine, I think they can find them but i didn't want to deal with it. sold it for a cl500. Quite as a mouse........

Long story but it turned out to be the rear drivers side hand brake cable miss adjusted.
It’s near the exhaust and after a few mins it got hot, expanded a bit and then no rattle. When cold rattled as previously described. A small adjustment and now no rattle!!

I have an annoying rattle from the same location on my 2003 SL55. It comes from right behind the drivers seat. A quick "feeling around" with a frieind driving was not able to pinpoint anything. Mine rattles constantly, as long as the car is moving, cold, or hot. I'm going to have a look at the hand brake cable, I'm suspect it is something else.
If anyone's been able to fix this rattle, please post it.
Thanks.

Buffer on boot lid caused me to almost go insane its by the top of the strut/damper where it touches other half on mechanism when boot shut. Grease it shut boot and its done. Before greasing try gently pushing down on boot lid 25cm infront of rear light cluster and listen for noise.
