Easiest Way to clean your dirty Exhaust Tips
Hey,
I picked up my SL55 about a month or so ago. I tried to look on the forum about a easy way to get the exhaust tips cleaned, everyone suggested chrome polish, and so on. I found a much easier way to clean these tips.
1. Apply SpitFire on the tips. (let it sit for about 30sec - 1min)
2. With a sponge (I used a dish washing sponge) and a bit of water start washing. (let the spitfire and water mix)
After these 2 easy steps everything should have washed away.
Now one last step left
3. Apply chrome polish for that nice shine.
You are Done.

So yes the spit fire will remove the black crud from there. some polish and they will look like new.

Thanks for the post. I just tried cleaning mine the other week with some metal polish and it didn't work very well. I too am curious where this Spitfire can be purchased. I'd like to give this stuff a try!

This stuff really works my friend just did his tips on a S55 and they look amazing.

I talked to my father today and from what he said you only get them by case, the case usually runs him around $60 - $70. He could get me some he said but when he buys them speratly it runs a bit more.
I'm thinking $10 plus shipping if you guys want me to get it for you. Try to do a search I just did and only found cases as well.

my tips are really bad, carbon on the outers and the caked on crud as well in the tips also...
after the spitfire, will any metal polish work; I have the mothers metal polish, which I think is good for chrome or polished aluminum...it's white cream/paste looking polish...haze on and buff off type...

I'm fairly certain the previous owner NEVER cleaned the exhaust tips. I've tried the above methods, several times, with no luck. Anyone else have any suggestions on how to get the tips clean? Here's what I'm dealing with:

2005 R 230 SL350 (M112 3.7). Sold the 1966 W113 230SL recently
Used some ancient stuff I had used on my W113 in 1999 or so. Sonax, Dutch or German. Worked like a charm and I guess it’s a lot less aggressive than quick sprays. Speaking of which, ladies and gents, part of this gunk we’re getting rid of represents what we’re spraying around in the air we all breath. Hmmmmm

Years ago, I bought an IBIZ car wash/wax kit at Costco where they were doing a demo. In addition to their wash and wax, it came with some "freebies". One was a roll of cloth used for metal polishing. The wash and was twas not very good, but the metal polish was great. I still have a bunch of it. I tear off a 3-4 inch strip and it does a nice job on the exhaust tips. I have no clue what it is, but it has an ammonia smell, like Brasso.

0000 steel wool and dollar store window cleaner. After cleaned, use a microfiber with the window cleaner and flip it over to the dry side and buff to shine the chrome. Dollar store window cleaner is weak compared to windex as it has a lower ammonia level. I have been using this method for over 20 years. I have won numerous cleanest bike awards at motorcycle shows. I never need to replace chrome. Chrome polish with abrasives wear down the chrome and make it look grayish-blue.
