I live in Nebraska and we don't have any of those after you buy your car, but there is an inspection if your car is purchased out of state, luckily the dmv here doesn't know what an sl600 is, and they definitely don't know what its exhaust looks/sounds like.

I just got a 2005 sl500 and wanted to know what is the better solution for an aggressive sound..... removing resonators or removing mufflers ...or does it sound the same if one or the other is removed. Anyone that has heard either-or please let me know. Thanks.

Finally...I'm in Speed Rush Heaven!
it gets complicated around stk H pipe, leave it be...It keeps the burble/crackle on de-cell. After removing body trays under engine it better exposes the huge restrictive oem cats (like little beer kegs weigh around 15-20lbs ea) replace those w/300 cell cats (smog friendly, NO chk engine lights) Sound is tremendous after Dwn Pipes & 300 cell cats...
Competent muffler shop shouldn't charge more than $500-$600 out the door (for Down pipes & oem cat removal, buy your own 300 cell cats off Ebay around $150 delivered, they weigh about 2 lbs ea vs 15-20 lbs ea stockers, great weight savings, considering mufflers weighed 20+ lbs ea your knocking 80+ lbs static weight off car, ea 100 lbs = 10 HP not to mention multi-other weight savings benefits)
This mod & oem cat sizing placement is innate to the SL/CL600 platform the 55k guys have smaller primary/2ndry cats & resonators. The SL600 does NOT have 4 seperate cats nor resonators in oem form, the Primary cats on 600 are huge because they are actually 2 cats welded together w/small space between ea cat, so replacing w/single 300 cell cat per side is huge performance & sound increase.

Awesome insight on the SL600 exhaust. This type of information is just what my "Retirement Advisor" was talking about! Thank you for the post.

Removing catalytic converters can get you into trouble (especially in a state with SMOG or safety inspections) but, that has nothing to do with resonators or mufflers.

I don't think I made a before and after, I really should have though. it really isn't that much louder, just gives a little bit more throat to it

Alright then that makes me feel good about doing the muffler deletes sooner.... Just didn't want something serious like the motor blowing up or something and then going in there and them saying "oh well you screwed with the factory exhaust and it caused the turbos to take a **** and well you're SOL"!

the factory design is a straight flow through with a baffle so it doesn't change any of the back pressure, just changes the tone. I think the only thing that could change your warranty is if you cut the cats off because that would change your exhaust flow, but it would depend on the shop. I have been flagged with my car so it is inspected for any repair now, which means if I did a full exhaust, I would have to swap it off every time....yuck
