NO LONGER ACTIVE
AFAIK, there is no way to put any sort of rear jump seat into the R230. They were possible to install in the R107 and R129. I know in my car, there's not even room for my wife's purse behind my set because I sit pretty far back. I once thought I'd see what it would be like to sit back there and adjust the passenger seat for me. I think if both people in the front and rear were under 4 feet tall, i tmight work. Otherwise, no-go. Enjoy your two-seater!

Backseats in the older model 129

I know that there are VERY small seats in the back, and I read somewhere that these are good to seat children up to 7 years old or upto 50kg weight, as long as the anti-roll bar is raised.

There are no backseats, or room for backseats of any kind, in R230s. There's a "shelf" ... for lack of a better term ... on which you might perch a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread, or such. But there's no room for human occupancy and there are no seatbelts back there. MB markets a piece of specially shaped luggage that fits across the shelf ... a throwback, no doubt, to the original W198 300SL and its specially crafted luggage.

Please look at the "seat belts" - they are VERTICAL not diagonal. They are for weekend luggage.Try putting one on someone- they click in directly between your legs!

This thread is testing my faith in humanity. I mean - look at the back of an R230. It does not look like anyone could or should be back there and a quick look at the owner's manual confirms that with GIANT WARNINGS.

Is there no common sense any more ?

yes, this thread is pretty painful to read, people insisting they have SL’s with rear seats in them (r230’s 2003-2012 models) (+/- 1 year depending on country)

Does anyone have pics or info about how those rear seat belts would hold in custom luggage?
Until today I thought they were just decorative but today learned I could pull them out.

Original luggage looked like this copy:

https://au-roadtripluggage.glopalsto...F%3Fwi%3Dproxy

See the two slots in the front, that's where the straps go.

The original luggage is as rare as, man, and go for crazy amounts on eBay.

Thanks Tom for the info and the link. Shouldn't be surprised that MB made luggage specifically to fit this car. When my dad bought a new 280SL back in 1968, he bought the optional MB luggage for the trunk; IIRC it was two modest suitcases, a hot box and a small duffle-sized bag.

There were members here who scoured the dealers for stock some years back and sold them for good money.

The copies don't look too bad - it's only a bag!
