SRS WARNING!!!

My SRS warning light came on while i was driving to vegas last night. What does it mean??? Is it something you can fix yourself??? if not how much is this going to cost me??? i called the dealership and said diagnostics alone will run about $135, i still have to drive back home dang it's scary!!! any inputs on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

It could be your child seat recognition sensor going bad.

But without checking, you wont know.

Its a good idea to pay the $ 135 and have it checked before you take the drive back.

You can fix anything yourself, with the proper tools.

Anywhere between $1 and $12,000. Just can't get more accurate than that. Sorry.

Probably not a bad idea. At least you'll have an answer to your first three questions.

Thanks guys.
Welcome.

Coming out of NYC last weekend my brothers E320cdi SRS went off. So he took it to our local dealer to reset the computer which most MB dealer you do business with will diagnose your car for free. But being in Vegas where I have paid $15 for a bottle of water which i was told you know it is a desert, I am not surprised at the 135.00. But anyhow they could not reset it and they think it's a cut or pinched wire in the seat. He thought it was from me while driving going to get something in the back seat. But they may be able to just reset it for you. It may be worth 135 not to see the red warning while driving.

SRS stands for ....

Supplemental Restraint System. Warning could be for malfunction in air bag system, seat belt system, etc. There may be a warranty coverage on some of this. Check with dealer after getting diagnosis.

As everyone else said - it could be anything. I had mine go off after a passenger got in the car and yanked on the seatbelt too hard. The pre-tensioner broke and the belt needed to be replaced. I am under warranty or it would have been expensive.

Will the airbags pop off randomly on your way home? Most likely not.

Will the airbags deploy if you get in an accident... who knows...

I live in vegas and I have found that the indys are pretty close in price to the two dealerships here.. Take it in and try to drink $135/15= 9 free bottled waters while waiting or stuff them in your wife's purse for the ride home

I had an SRS warning light come on once after I slammed into a wall at a gazillion miles per hour.

No, not really... the air bags never went off

This happened on another MB of mine. Had it checked out. It was a bad sensor in the passenger seat. Apparently this happens often. Problem is that it is an expensive fix. They have to pull the front chair and in not too friendly of an engineering design, have to take it apart to replace the relatively cheap sensor. Was told $700 at dealer and $550 at an independent shop. Crap!! Haven't had it fixed yet.....
