Any pointers as to how I should proceed with a DIY grill blackout?

ummmm.

Step 1- Remove Grill
Step 2- Clean grill with soap and water then Dry
Step 3- 3m painters tape on any surface that you do not want painted (ex: Mercedes chrome emblem
Step 4- Apply paint (Krylon spray can)
Step 5- wait approx 30 mins then apply second coat
Step 6- after 24 hours apply one coat of clear
Step 7- install when clear is fully dried.

Thats how i would do it at least.

Before you start to paint, rough up the original surface with 600grit sandpaper. Clean with a good degreaser, then wipe down with isopropyl alcohol. Prime the surface before you apply the paint. Then follow the steps above.
