I just dropped my car off at the shop for some mods including installing some lowering links. My installer offered to swap me his 20" AMG reps for my 18" stocks for $1600.
His SL55 is slammed and the tires are new. When inspecting the tires his fronts/rears were:
245/30/20
275/30/20
Shouldn't the aspect ratio of the fronts be at least 35? I asked him and he just said it's fine
Should I be concerned with handling issues or anything?

The aspect ratio on the 19" factory tires is 35. If you increase the wheel diameter to 20", the aspect ratio must decrease to maintain the same rolling circumference. Without being overly scientific, 30 should be about right. As for the tire size, the 18" and 19" are 255 and 285. Perhaps he went a bit smaller to clear the fender.
The first thing I question is reps for reals, 20's for 18's. Cash.
Something doesn't really make sense here.

Not only that, but if his car was "slammed" as you put it, the tires will no doubt have uneven wear. You state the tires are new, but how new? New, as in 0 miles new? Or new, as in, the 'look' new.

In a similar vein as to one poster's question, I would ask why is the installer going from 20's back to 18's. I would wonder if he has/had problems with the 20" reps and is trying to dump them on someone else. Kind of like an electrician getting rid of a "great" voltmeter for a less expensive one. Suspicious.

good point you guys make. I guess the tires look new so im not so sure how new. The installer is actually an acquaintance whom all my friends w/ high-end vehicles take to. He is trying to get rid of his SL. He said if I didn't feel comfortable taking his he could order me some brand new ones, but it'll be in the range of 3K w/ tires. I've been trying to find similar ones online to see if that is an accurate quote but am having trouble. Maybe some of you may be more familiar...it looks just like these Avante Garde's M328 which sell for around 1K w/o tires.Originally Posted by Rook3300
