Right mirror turn signal lens cracked
Can anyone educate me on what is involved in replacing this plastic lens for my US spec 06 SL500? Is this a DIY fix? Part # is 1718200421, and cost less than $50.
My dealer has offered to do it for $200, and even guarantees he'll use a new part!
Thanks

Funny you ask this. The same lens on my 2007 SL550 was broken. I got the part this week from my dealer (around $50) and just replaced it myself last night. It was very easy, and took about 20-30 minutes - mainly because I took some extra time to clean the inside of the mirror housing while I had it off.
Assuming its similar to the '07 (although I believe the mirror housing is a bit different shape on the '06), the glass mirror has little tabs on back in a circle that clips into the motorized mirror adjuster. Gently unclip the mirror and dsiconnect the wires from the glass (for heating I presume). You will then need to use a small torx head tool to remove the adjuster motor (mine had three screws). Once the motor is out of the way, there are a few more torx screws that hold the plastic housing to the "guts". Remove those screws and wiggle the housing off the car. Then replace the lense, and reassemble.
If you are at all mechanical (and I am not that mechanical), it is a very easy fix. The sweat from me came from popping the mirror off with out breaking it or the little clips that hold it to the motor.
I would have taken pictures if I would have known that I wasn't the only person this week that needed to fix this!

I just got some new housings and plan to paint the guts to go with the black theme of the car, anyone post up pictures on this yet? It easiest to start with mirrors adjust all the way to a certain direction?
