As I went yesterday to attempt my 1st brake inspection on my new project, I quickly came to a dead end when I tried to use my regular cross-wrench on the wheels and it's too big for the holes. Fantatic, and this car didn't come with fuse diagrams, tire iron, or anything else that's supposed to be in the trunk. I guess this is a special part that costs $1000 and you can't get it at Pep Boys, right? Anyone have an extra they'll sell?
It seems the lugs are 17mm, and a socket will fit in there, but I'm a little hesitant to try to pull the lugs off with a regular 3/8" drive socket. I see that going badly.

To remove wheel lug bolts, I would advise using a 1/2" breaker bar with a deep impact socket & extension.
You do not need a tire iron, that is used for taking a tire off a wheel.

Why can't you use a 17mm socket? I do that all the time.
I torque my own lugs so they aren't overtightened. So I can use a 3/8" drive socket.
If you are removing wheels for the first time and they may be too tight, I'd recommend a 1/2" drive socket. And use a 18" or 24" breaker bar. You can hold on to the fender with your hands (so you don't fall) and jump on the end of the breaker bar to loosen them.
Works perfectly.
